PSG’s Angel Di Maria rejoices with team mate after scoring a brace against Barcelona

Paris Saint Germain’s Angel Di Maria, Edinson Cavani and Julian Draxler made today’s Valentine Day a horrible one for Barcelona as PSG walloped the Spanish giants 4-0 in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

Di Maria opened scoring in the 18th minute with a free kick and before the half-time Draxler doubled PSG’s advantage, with a drive to the goal.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Di Maria added to the misery of the Catalans when he scored his second goal of the night, via a brilliant curler.

With Barcelona unable to make an impression, Paris looked dangerous every time they came forward – and they made it four 18 minutes from time. Thomas Meunier was allowed to advance from right-back and slipped a pass through for Cavani, who beat Ter Stegen at the near post.

The man of the match was Di Maria, who  two Messi-esque goals, the second of which was ultra-difficult to execute while running flat out, and showed exemplary technique.

Fittingly, the goals came on his 29th birthday.

The PSG victory  left Barça facing their joint worst European defeat, and Samuel Umtiti’s late header that came back off the post summed up their evening.

Stats of the game showed that PSG had more shots on target than Barcelona, nine to one, even though the visitors had superior possession, 59% to PSG’s 41.

Luis Enrique, Barcelona coach said at the end of the match:  “The result reflects what happened out on the field. We were clearly second best.”

In the second match of the night, Benfica beat visiting Dortmund 1-0.
