Two last gasp goals by Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata saved Real Madrid against a shock defeat by Sporting CP in the first match of their Group F at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
Bruno Cesar had scored for the visitors in the 48th minute and even though Madrid had 59 per cent possession, they could not equalise until Ronaldo’s efforts in the 89th minute via a direct free kick. The kick was awarded after he was tripped by Sporting CP’s Elias.
A minute after, Alvaro Morata headed in the winner, with James Rodriguez providing the assist.
The winner must have been a great relief to Coach Zinedine Zidane, as Borussia Dortmund, who are also in the group went on the rampage in Warsaw, by defeating Legia Warszawa 6-0, to make them lead the group.
Remarkably, all Borussia’s goals were scored by six different players in the stunning performance. They now lead the group.
Debutants Leicester, the champions of England also registered a good impression in their first UEFA match, defeating Club Brugge 3-0. Riyad Mahrez scored in each half after Marc Albrighton had opened the gate in the 5th minute. The English club now lead Group G as FC Porto were held 1-1 by visiting FC Koebenhavn.
In Group E, Tottenham were beaten at home by Monaco 1-2, while Bayer Leverkussen and CSKA Moscow drew 2-2. All the goals were scored in the first half, with CSKA scoring their two goals in less than three minutes, to take a vital point home.
In Group H, Juventus were held by Sevilla to a goalless draw. But Lyon playing at home beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-0.
In the rescheduled match in group C, Manchester City spanked their German visitors,Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0.
Sergio Agüero bagged a hat-trick while Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho increased the scoreline on the 90th minute, just seven mintes after he replaced Aguero.
