Prominent Benin politician Sebastien Ajavon was charged with drug trafficking on Friday, along with three of his workers.
His defence team was made up of 26 lawyers. including Mr. Alain Orounla and Maitre Paul Kato Atita.
The tribunal is composed of Jacques Hounsou as president with Peter Perfect and Yehouénou Dassoundo, as members.
Ajavon, who is also one of Benin’s richest businessmen, came third in a presidential election in March.
Detained a week ago, he denied charges of transporting and trafficking illegal drugs when he appeared before a tribunal in the commercial Cotonou, witnesses said.
A haul of 18 kg (40 pounds) of cocaine was found by Maritime police last week Thursday in a shipping container, belonging to his company.
