The Police in Jigawa have arrested eight suspects for alleged theft and vandalism of public utilities between Sept. 11 and Sept. 17.
The Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in the state, Mr Jinjiri Abdu, confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Tuesday.
Abdu said that one of the suspects (Name withheld) and aged 25, was arrested on Sept. 11 in Kazaure Local Government Area for allegedly stealing three laptop computers belonging to the Kazaure Informatics Institute valued at N360,000.
He said that during the arrest, the three items were recovered from the suspect.
The police spokesman said that the suspect had confessed to the crime during interrogation.
According to him, two of the suspects aged 19 and 24, were arrested in the same local government area for allegedly stealing a Haojue motorcycle valued at N112,000.
Abdu further told NAN that another suspect was arrested also on Sept. 12 in Birniwa town with solar cable wire suspected to be stolen from one of the solar-powered boreholes in the area.
According to him, two of the suspects were arrested on Sept. 12 in possession of electric wire belonging to the Kano Electricity Company (KEDCO) valued at N1.3 million.
He said the suspects were arrested at a motor park while attempting to transport the stolen cable to Kano.
According to the police spokesman, on Sept.17, at about 2:30 a.m., the police received a report from Kazaure local government area that armed robbers had blocked Kazaure-Bandutse road.
He said two police patrol teams were deployed to the scene immediately.
“Fortunately, one of the armed robbers was shot while the rest took to their heels.
“After the incident, the wounded armed robber was rushed to hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
“But efforts are on to trace the fleeing suspects as the case is under investigation,” Abdu said.
He said all the arrested suspects had been charged to court .
The police spokesman assured the public of the readiness of the command to safeguard their lives and property in the state. (NAN)
