### The European Union says it planted 634,132 varieties of trees in Katsina State in the last five years to prevent desertification and promote green house concept.

It said no fewer than 1,000 farmers were also provided with fertilisers and insecticides to promote farming in the area.

The project was executed under the EU Fuel Wood Balance Programme and implemented by the National Planning Commission , Oxfam, and other international agencies.

### The National Council for Arts and Culture says it will partner with all diplomatic missions in Nigeria to promote cultural and artistic relationship.

Chief Segun Runsewe, Director-General of the council, disclosed this at an Exhibition put together by the council and the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Abuja.

He said Iran has opened a door that would remain strong for other missions to join.

### An estimated 12 million girls under 18 years, globally get married every year, UNICEF has said in a new report.

This signals a 15 per cent drop in the last decade, from one in four to approximately one in five girls.

It warned that if the current rate in child marriage continue more than 150 million girls across the world would marry before they are adults by 2030.

### The UN has called for urgent action to protect 357 million children affected by forced recruitment, sexual exploitation and abject poverty, as well as separation from family.

UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Kate Gilmore, said 43 million children across 63 countries in 2016 alone were in humanitarian crises and 357 million children currently live in conflict zones.

This shows a 75 per cent increase in the last decade and accounts for one in six children globally.

### A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing the Oscar of Frances McDormand, winner of Best Actress prize at the 90th Academy Awards, the Los Angeles police said.

Terry Bryant, 47, was arrested for grand theft, after the statuette went missing.

Witnesses said Bryant, dressed in tuxedo, strutted around at the party, claiming that McDormand’s Oscar was his.(NAN)
