(Xinhua/NAN) The United Nations (UN) has confirmed that over $11 billion Dollars had been spent in the last 13 years on handling refugees across the world.
Marta Ruedas, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, made the statement on Friday in Khartoum at a press conference marking World Humanitarian Day.
She said that just between 2015 and 2016, the UN alone had spent over $850 million on over 70,000 persons in Africa currently seeking refuge in Sudan.
She said that the amount was used to carter for refugees, internally displaced persons, asylum seekers and other people of concern being hosted by Sudan.
Number of Refugees
The official further disclosed that 90,000 South Sudanese refugees had crossed into Sudanese territories since the beginning of 2016.
“Previous UN figures showed that around 198,600 South Sudanese have fled to Sudan after the eruption of violence in their country in December 2013.
“Most Southern Sudanese refugees live in seven camps in White Nile, East Darfur, West Kordofan and Khartoum States,’’ she said.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese government had declared that it would treat South Sudanese nationals within its territories as foreigners.
Officials in Sudan that the government would take a legal procedures against those who do not have passports or entry visas. (Xinhua/NAN)
