Video: Chinese approves drug for HIV-1 treatment

====China Food and Drug Administration has approved the sale of a new drug for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Makers of the drug, Frontier Biotech, a pharmaceutical company based in China said Aikening, or Albuvirtide injection, said it can be used with other antiretroviral drugs to treat infected patients who suffer from viral replication.

It said data from clinical trials showed that Aikening was effective against major strains of HIV, including resistant viruses, with long acting efficacy.

Plateau Government has confirmed two positive cases of monkey pox in Shendam Local Government Area of the state.

Dr Kunden Deyin, the state Commissioner for Health, urged the public to report any sign of unexplained rashes to the nearest health facility.

He pledged the collaboration of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the ministry to monitor contacts to curtail the spread of the disease.

====Prof. Moji Adeyeye, Director-General National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, says the agency’s officers have returned to the nation’s ports after seven years, to check importation of illicit drugs.

Adeyeye said the absence of officers at the nation’s ports was the main cause of rising cases of illicit drugs like tramadol and codeine coming into the country.

=====The Nigerian Army says it is providing free medical outreach to indigent residents of Yobe for two weeks.

The Commanding Officer of the task force brigade, Major Emmanuel Oqua, said the exercise had commenced in Rigan-Koggo, Nguru Local Government Area of the state to strengthen civilian-military cordial relationship.

====Mrs Hafsat Abiola-Castelo, daughter of MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria, has commended the Federal Government for declaring the day as the new Democracy Day.

Other prominent Nigerians, who joined in commending President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s new democracy day, were Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, Chief Tony Momoh, Nuhu Ribadu and Gov. Rauf Aregbesola.

=====The Nigeria Football Federation has paid tribute to the late Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, who passed away two years ago.

Keshi who died at 54, led Nigeria to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and also won the Africa Cup of Nations title as a player in 1994.
