World Number 1 Rafael Nadal beat Grigor Dimitrov in the Shanghai Rolex Masters quarter-final to book a semi-final clash with big-serving Croatian Marin Cilic.
Just as in China Open final, Nadal needed to battle through a three-setter to shrug off the challenge of the Bulgarian, winning 6-4 6-7 6-3.
Cilic on the other hand advanced to the semi-finals without dropping a set. The fourth-seeded Croatian improved to 39-16 on the year after he defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 6-3, 6-4 in 81 minutes on Friday.
Cilic was broken for the first time in his 29th service game of the week at 3-3 in the second set by Ramos-Vinolas.
Cilic, who is now 6th in the Emirates ATP Race to London, can clinch his spot at next month’s Nitto ATP Finals — to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November — by reaching the title match.
Nadal leads Cilic 4-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, including victories in their past four meetings.
Swiss veteran, Roger Federer will play Frenchman Richard Gasquet in another quarter-final pairing, while Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, will meet Serbian Victor Troicki.
