This is the Canadian rapper’s 13 nominations – the most ever for an artist in one year.
He got nominated in 11 categories including favourite male rap and pop/rock artist as well as favourite pop/rock album for his multi-platinum-selling “Views.”
Pop singer Rihanna has seven nominations, including for artist of the year, going into the awards gala, which will be staged in Los Angeles starting at 6 pm (0200 GMT Monday).
Also in the running for the evening’s top prize are Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Carrie Underwood.
Bieber and British singer Adele each have five nominations.
This year’s gala will be emceed by US model Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharaoh.
Grande, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Bruno Mars and Sting are set to perform live, while organizers have announced Bieber will take the stage via video link from Zurich on his “Purpose” world tour.
Presenters will include German model Heidi Klum and actors Robert Downey Jr and Zoe Sandana.
Founded in 1973 as an alternative to the Grammys, the American Music Awards are the world’s biggest fan-voted award show, according to the organizers.
Prizes are awarded based on an online vote.
Nominations, however, are determined by record sales – a quirk which led to a nomination for Prince’s “Purple Rain,” released in 1984, in the 2016 Favorite Soundtrack category, after sales spiked in the wake of the pop icon’s death in April.(dpa/NAN)
