Arsenal overtook Tottenham  in the English Premier League, EPL  on Sunday to occupy the third position after beating Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.

Two goals, scored by Olivier Giroud in the 17th minute in the first half and  an Alex Iwobi header in the 56th minute decided  the match  in which Arsenal were scarcely  threatened by the  fellow London visitors.

Arsenal dominated proceedings with  65 per cent  overall possession to Palace’s 35. Arsenal also had eight shots on target and 11 off target, to the opponents combined six shots.

Tottenham in an earlier  match on New Year’s Day had overtaken both  Arsenal and Manchester City for some moments on the table after beating Watford 4-1.

Chelsea, with 49 points however are enjoying the league leadership in a world of their own, with a nine point gap between them and Arsenal, who have  40.

Liverpool are second with 43 points, while Tottenham are fourth with 39 points, the same point with Manchester City.

Manchester United have been doing a lot of catching up in the 6th position. They now have 36 points.

The race for the League title continues between Monday and Wednesday, with Chelsea and Tottenham meeting.
