Neymar Jnr: wins Brazil’s elusive gold

Neymar Junior, captain of Brazil U23 team collapsed on the field of Maracana Stadium and  burst into tears after realising what his last penalty kick has done for his country.

Brazil has just won Olympic Football gold, a medal that has eluded it for decades. And Neymar would go into the history books as the man who made it possible, scoring the decisive goals.

The Barcelona forward had shot his country ahead with a monster of a goal, a free kick  in the 27th minute, which he curled 28 metres away into the net.

But Brazil’s advantage was cancelled in the 59th minute by Germany’s Max Meyer.

And the match, which was watched by a filled Stadium then went into extra time of 30 minutes. There was no goal scored and then the penalty shootout followed.

Both Brazil and Germany scored their first four shots each, but the German player, Nils Petersen lost his country’s fifth, playing straight into the hands of Brazil’s keeper.

It fell on Neymar to decide the match. As he stepped forward, he knew just what he had to do: He blasted the ball into the net, beyond the reach of  the German keeper.

Maracana erupted in rapture.

Brazil has won the Olympic gold medal and Germany which humiliated the senior team during the World Cup, two years ago, were left to take home the silver medal.

Nigeria won the bronze after beating Honduras 3-2.

Brazil had lost the Olympic final three times in 1984, 1988 and 2012.

Germany are now the only World Cup winners never to have won the Olympic gold medal.
