Paris Saint Germain coach was the butt of jokes and pillory on Twitter Wednesday after his club’s 1-3 loss to hosts Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
His managerial competence and tactics were questioned by many Twitter users for leaving in Paris the club’s captain Thiago Silva, preferring to use instead 22-year-old Presnel Kimpembe in the centre of the PSG defence.
Then in the 66th minute of the game, he pulled out Cavani when the match was in balance and introduced a defender Thomas Meunier. Twenty minutes after, Madrid were up 3-1.
In contrast, Real Madrid’s coach, Zinedine Zidane brought in attacker Gareth Bale in the 68th minute, by removing Frenchman Karim Benzema. Ten minutes, he substituted Casemiro with Lucas Vazquez and Isco with Marco Asensio. Madrid scored two goals in the 83rd and 86th minute to gain an advantage in the second leg in Paris, in two weeks time.
Here are some of the comments hitting out at Emery after the match:
Retweet if you think Unai Emery is one of the dumbest managers to ever live.

That’s actually sackable from Unai Emery. Taking off a player like Edinson Cavani that early to play for a draw is a joke.

Unai Emery cost PSG that game with his substitutions. Lost all shape and cohesion in midfield after Cavani withdrawn. Alves decided he had a free role & caused so many overloads on their right side. #RMAPSG

Unai Emery however did not agree with the Twitter analysts.
In a comment after the match, he blamed the referee for favouring Madrid.
“We were quite clearly robbed today. There was a handball and penalty against Sergio Ramos. And there was a foul on Kimpembe for Real’s 2nd goal. I did not like Rocchi’s refereeing. Many small errors make something big,” he said.
