Rangers International FC of Enugu on Sunday defeated Sunshine Stars FC of Akure by 2 – 0 in a 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) match played at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 20,000 football fans who watched the match on a free-ticket courtesy of Gov. Ifeanyi Uguwanyi of Enugu State defied a downpour to watch the match.
In the match, Rangers’ striker, Bobby Clement, scored a brace to return the club to the summit of the league table.
His first goal came through a cross from his teammates in the 36th minute, while the second goal came in the 49th minute through a powerful shot.
The visiting team, however, missed the opportunity to equalise at the first half of the match by losing a penalty kick at the 40th minute.
Rangers’ Coach, Amapakabo Imama, told NAN that he was happy for the clean win and optimal performance of the players.
He said “notwithstanding the discouraging weather, our players displayed a winning mentality and character.
“They played to the game-plan of the match and I will work hard to ensure we hold-on to this winning mentality in the rest of the remaining two games we have in the league.”
The Team Manager of Sunshine Stars FC, Yomi Ogunlade, said that luck was against his team as his players had put up a brilliant performance against Rangers.
He said “the match was 50-50 by the statistics we have; but luck was not just on our side today.”
NAN reports that Rangers FC is now having 57 points from 34 matches played so far; with one home and one away match left to go in the ongoing NPFL.
