Rafael Nadal is out of the US Open, sacked by 25th ranked player, Lucas Pouille from France.
Pouille grabbed the first set 6-1, but Nadal took the second set 6-2. The 22 year old star rallied to take the third set 6-4, while Nadal tied 2-2 with a 6-3 win.
The final set was decided with a tie break, with Nadal, twice champions here, saving two match points to level at 6-6. Pouille served to win another match point.
Nadal served next but handed over the match to the French man. This is the first year since 2004 Rafael Nadal has not reached the quarterfinal at a Grand Slam in a calendar year.
The four hour-long match was the biggest victory of Pouille’s four-year old career and gave him a ticket to the quarter finals. He turned pro in 2012.
The French man hit a nerveless string of winners in the final-set tie-break to clinch his win.
He will play compatriot Gael Monfils after his win over Marcos Baghdatis.
Elsewhere Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, also of France, ended American interest in the men’s singles by beating Jack Sock.
The ninth seed will play the winner of world number one Novak Djokovic and British number four Kyle Edmund’s meeting.
