Serena Williams: too powerful for the Russian

Serena Williams, the World number one has qualified for the quarter finals of the US Open, dismissing in two straight sets, the Russian challenger, Yaroslava Shvedova.

It was Serena’s 308th Grand Slam match victory, becoming  the winningest person (Male/Female) in Grand Slam history

Serena, 35 years old on 26 September, took on the 28 year-old Russian, ranked 50 before the Open, just after Czech Karolina Pliskova had knocked out elder sister, Venus in three sets.

The American did not give Shvedova any opportunity as she strolled away in two sets, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Serena will now meet Romanian Simona Halep in the quarter finals.

Fifth ranked Halep beat Spanish Carla Suarez Navarro in two sets in an earlier match.

Other  quarter final pairings include the match between  Roberta Vinci and Angelique Kerber, the Australian Open champion and Caroline Wozniacki versus Anastasija Sevastova

Italian Vinci recorded a major upset at the last year Open when she beat Serena in the semi-final.

Karolina  Plikova, conqueror of Venus Williams will   battle Ana Konjuh, who beat Polish woman Agnieszka Radwanska in the late match.

Plikova had denied tennis buffs the chance of watching Serena and Venus play a possible semi-final match, if they were able to beat quarter-final opponents.
