The Police in Ogun have arrested a liquor seller, Mr Salako Taloju, from whom four persons drank local gin, famously called Ogogoro on Monday.
The three died on the same day, while the fourth died later.
Taloju who is a gateman was arrested on Tuesday at Ibara Housing Estate in Abeokuta inside the kiosk where he sells liquor.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who was at the scene of the arrest gathered that Taloju who sells liquor in front of his boss’s house had been in the business for over 20 years.
Taloju who was heavily drunk first resisted arrest pleading that he was innocent.
The gatemen told policemen that only three persons died and gave their names as Baba Imeko, Baba Onwenu and Easy.
According to him, all the three lived around the area.
NAN, however, gathered that the incident involved four persons, three of whom died on Monday while the fourth died in the early hours of Tuesday.
Taloju who spoke incoherently to journalists said, “We have been drinking together for a long time.
“I do not know why they have to accuse me now of killing them,
“I have even taken out of the liquor and nothing happened.”
When asked if he had reported the matter to his boss, Taloju simply said, “Do you want to kill me?
” My boss has warned me on several occasions not to drink again but I refused.”
One of the neighbours, Mrs. Kemi Adepitan, confirmed that the victims died after consuming the liquor inside the kiosk.
“It is true that they died. We were at the house of one of the victims this morning to sympathise with them.”
