By Friday Idachaba

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kogi on Thursday said it had registered 45,757 new voters in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in the state.

Administrative Secretary of the commission in the state, Mr Adison Mailafiya, made this known while briefing newsmen in Lokoja.

Mailafiya said the figure represented 23,534 males and 22,223 female voters.

He said that 1,566 registered voters applied for transfer of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the state, adding that 284,178 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were yet to be collected by registered voters.

He added that six additional centres had been approved for the state to address the challenges of distance as well as congestion.

According to Mailafiya, two additional centres were created in each of the three senatorial districts in the state.

He said that the essence of the exercise was to enable those that turned 18 years of age after the last exercise or those who missed out in the previous exercises to do so.

He called on registered voters yet to collect their PVCs to use the ongoing registration to do so.

Mailafitya warned against taking advantage of the exercise to engage in illegal activities.

He appealed to traditional rulers, religious and political leaders, security agencies, the media and civil society organisations to assist in sensitising the citizenry.(
