(Xinhua/NAN) The Zambian government has started working on the revision of the minimum wage, the country’s Labour Commissioner, Chanda Kaziya, said on Tuesday.

Kaziya said work on the revision of the minimum wage has commenced and was expected to be completed soon.

He said the changing economic situation had forced the government to embark on revising the minimum wage after the first revision in 2012.

The government is concerned about the low wages and is actively working on changing this,” he said during a live television interview on Radio Phoenix, a private radio station.

He did not say when the revised minimum wage will come into effect.

He said tht the government was concerned about challenges in the labour sector, which employers has taken advantage of and was abusing the workers.

He warned that the government would not sit idle and allow employers to continue abusing workers, adding that labour inspections will be intensified.
