Social media agog over Edo polls

Nigerians have taken to the social media to congratulate Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), for emerging the new governor of Edo state.

Obaseki defeated Rev. Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the keenly contested governorship election held on Wednesday.

The official result by the Independent National Electoral Commission shows that Obaseki won 319,484 votes, ahead of Ize Iyamu who recorded 253,173 votes.

The results from the 18 local governments were announced by the Returning Officer, Professor Kayode Soremekun, in Benin city.

Mr Celsus Ohain, said in his Facebook posting that “It’s sunrise for some and sunset for others; sun-up and sun-down for yet others as the Edo guber election winds down to a finality.

“Different strokes indeed!’’

Kote Onungwe Obe-Eleme said the election heralded “ the eclipse of the Igbinedion and Anenih dynasties’’.

Mr. Victor Oshioke said that in three straight nights no one had a sleep, but the result is impressive.

Also in his Facebook page, he said: “I delivered my polling unit without any incident for Godwin Obaseki.’’

A journalist and online commentator, Mr. Abass Yakubu, also posted pn Facebook saying: “”Godwin Obaseki is the Governor Elect of Edo State!!!! Take this to the Bank… Good Day folks”

Mr Abdallah Yakubu Musah, said in his page that majority will have their way in democracy while the minority will have their say.

“ The people have spoken and we must respect their verdict, but where we had lapses we must not go violent but rather, we should exhaust the instrumentality of our institutions to seek redress so that our democracy can be strengthened.’’

Mr. Omokhudu Odion said “Just wondering in my village square………….Eagerly waiting for somebody to pick up his phone to concede.’’

“Former President Goodluck Jonathan who was commander in Chief didn’t wait for Prof Jega to announce his defeat before he conceded. Somebody please follow good example.

“The Edo people have spoken with their voices through the ballot. We must respect their wishes.’’

Others who took to Twitter commended the conclusion of the election and urged all the actors to embrace the true meaning of democracy as a true winner would emerge.

Gloria Adagbon said that from the official INEC results thus far, Pastor Ize-Iyamu should imitate Oga Jona & call Godwin Obaseki to concede defeat.’’

Eniola Opeyemi said “Dear electorate, I wouldn’t vote for Godwin Obaseki for party sake alone but for his personality.’’

Ms Oluremi Omowaiye said that just as predicted, APC clearly won Edo North and Edo South.

“Congrats to Godwin Obaseki of APC,’’ he said.

“And Edo decided. Godwin Obaseki is the governor-elect. The people have spoken,’’ said Mr. Kunle Alawode. ‏

Median Seyi Law, a comedian, said “APC Candidate, Godwin Obaseki Wins Edo Governorship Election.’’

Adekunle Aliu, “ congratulations to the entire people of Edo for the peaceful election. Gov Oshiomole, Godwin Obaseki’’

Mr. Adeola Fayehun, said: “Godwin Obaseki wins Edo State Governorship Election’’ and Mr. Aye Dee congratulated Godwin Obaseki as the declared the next governor of Edo State.

“Those aggrieved should please head to a Tribunal,’’ he said.
Ubong Gabasi said: “APC it is! Congratulations to Godwin Obaseki.’’

Ms. Omez said “Good people of Edo state please do not waste energy rioting….y’all should sit back and watch Godwin Obaseki take Edo State to the next level.’’
