The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) table tennis team on Monday in Abuja won both the male and female competitions of the 2017 FCT SWAN Week.
In the competition held at the Old Parade Ground, Tokunbo Adesanya won 3-0 against teammate Tomilayo Adedeji (11-6, 11-7, 11-5) to lift the trophy in the male category.
Adesanya had earlier swept aside Dennis Adegunlayi of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 in the preliminaries to qualify for the semi-final.
He also beat Michael Obasi of Hot FM 3-0 in the semi-finals to move to the final, winning 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 for an all-NAN affair in the final.
Obasi had beaten Godswil Ayoniba of ITV 2-0.
Adedeji, in qualifying for the final, had beaten Steve Ojo of Independent Television (ITV) 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6, and Ifeanyi Elumzien of Hot FM 3-0 in the semi-finals.
Similarly, Temitope Crown, also of NAN, eliminated teammate Justina Nwokorie in the final 3-0 aggregate, winning 11-7, 11-4, 11-4.
Speaking after presenting the trophies to winners, Kayode Adeniyi, the FCT SWAN Chairman, advised media professionals to have interest in sports, and the table tennis game particularly.
“Promoting the game of table tennis as a form of recreation is essential not only to our health but our professional life,’’ he said.
Adeniyi however appealed to the management of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to further motivate the winners of the competition by encouraging them to undergo regular training.
NAN reports that the ongoing 2017 FCT SWAN Week will end on Thursday with the final and third-place matches in the five-a-side football competition.
